La Loma breeds butterflies for live displays at butterfly pavilions and natural history museums in Europe and the USA. We do not sell butterflies to the dried specimen market or for use at weddings or other events. A small captive butterfly population produces hundreds of caterpillars. When the caterpillars pupate they are shipped to Europe and the United States. They emerge as butterflies in 'living tropical greenhouses' such as the Stratford Butterfly Farm www.butterflyfarm.co.uk. We also practice butterfly 'ranching'. By planting a variety of flowering plants (food for adult butterflies) and host plants (food for caterpillars) we are able to attract more and more wild butterflies to La Loma. We believe butterfly farming and ranching to be a sustainable and environmentally responsible way of using the jungle's resources for the education and enjoyment of others. An essential element of our practice is the conservation and restoration of the habitat of the butterflies of Bocas del Toro. For more information contact: butterfly@thejunglelodge.com
