Little Library in the Bay

It’s been a while in the making but the Bahia Honda Biblioteca is now open.  An official vine cutting ceremony took place last weekend and the library was crammed with eager readers, and not just because we had cake.  The kids spent the week beforehand decorating their own book bags made from retired La Loma linens and on opening day each received a little pack of goodies, books and school supplies, to stuff in their bags.

From Much Ado Books in the UK, the Nadel family and Education is Power who raised thousands of dollars to buy books,  Students without Borders and Michigan State students who renovated the dilapidated old building, built the furniture and painted practically every surface with gorgeous murals, One Library at a Time who helped catalogue the stock, to the families of Bahia Honda whose love of books spawned the idea for a library, the support given through La Loma and Give and Surf to make this project happen has been incredible.

In addition to being a cool and tranquil space to relax and read (note the hammocks,) the library will act as a spring board for many more community projects. And for anyone wanting to bring a little something down for the Bahia Honda community we’d always welcome more books to help grow the biblioteca. Check out more photos at
